              Qingzhong Li, Academician

              Academician of Chinese academy of engineering, Professor geophysicist, Ph. D. supervisor and Honorary President of the collegeof marine geosciences at ocean university of China, Mr. Li Qingzhong was born on October 10,1930 in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Department of Physics at Tsinghua University in 1952, then he worked in Sino-Soviet Petroleum Company, Exploration Headquarter of Songliao Oil Battle, Shengli oilfield, Exxon Data Processing Center in Houston, the Western Geophysical Company, Bureau of Geophysical Prospecting and Ocean University of China one after another. He once assumed the office of the deputy chief engineer of Petroleum Geophysical Exploration Bureau of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), editor of the magazines such as Oil Geophysical Prospecting, Chinese Journal of Geophysics, and senior consultant of many oil fields including Daqing, Jilin, Shengli, Talimu, Xinjiang, Zhongyuan, Qinghai, Yumen. He was selected a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.

              Main Achievements:

              He is the founder of physical seismology in our country. His basic thought of fluctuation seismology was first published in his 200,000 character long paper called “basic property of seismic wave——reflected wave, freak wave and interference wave of complicated fault block oilfield”. He firstly proposed themigration homing method of “diffracted scanningstack with integration” and obtained the first post-stack migration section in our country, whose structure image is precise and fault is clear. After popularization and application, great economic benefit was achieved. Within two year, 540,000,000 tons of oil reserve was detected in west of Shanghe area of Shengli oilfield.

              He first put forward the method pimples of “three dimensional seismic exploration” internationally and carried out early experiment of 3-d seismic exploration in Shengli oilfield. He concluded this achievement, presented his thesis in the 48th SEG annual conference and won high evaluation from domestic and foreign scholars and experts. At present, three-dimensionalseismic exploration has become an important means of oil exploration which is widely used.

              He first used “two-step method” completing three-dimensional migration imaging, whose efficiency was hundreds of times than “one-step method” used internationally at that time. His thesis of this method was published 5 years earlier than that of foreign ones. In SHENGLI oilfield, he organized the first one “bundle construction” of three-dimensionalseismic exploration and found Xinli village oilfield with 110,000,000 tonsreserve.

              Since 1980s, a great deal of cutting-edgeresearch work regarding seismic stratigraphy and seismic exploration with high resolution has been conducted comprehensively and a series of outcomes have been gained. The paper, “some problems in seismic stratigraphic interpretation of continental formation” which was published on “Oil Geophysical Prospecting”, was highly evaluated by Sangre, the former general geologist of Exxon Corporation, USA and also other famous scholars. His monograph “The way to obtain a better resolution in seismic prospecting: A systematical analysis of high resolution seismic exploration”, has ranked among classics, guiding high resolution seismic exploration in China.“Multiple oil-gas accumulative zones theory and practice of Bohai bay basin”, as his outstanding research achievement, was awarded national prize for science and technology (special grade award).

              Joining Ocean University of China in 2001, he was appointed as honorary director of the college of marine geosciences as well as doctoral supervisor. Although already over 80 years old, he is still actively participating in teaching and research activities. An integrated research grouphas been established, and several national 863 projects and many enterprise-funded projects have been completed under his guidance. Meanwhile, he has supervised many master and doctoral students, and published monographs,“Exploration Method of Lithological Oil and Gas Field” and “Multi-wave Seismic Prospecting” etc.
